EXHIBITOR SESSION: What’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys? Making comics about a barrel of monkeys in your target language! This session will focus on the many benefits of comic making in the world language classroom. Participants will be introduced to Pixton, an award-winning platform backed by research that makes language, storytelling, and creative expression accessible to all.
This presentation examines the role of CRT in an intermediate, community-engaged college Spanish class, with gains in proficiency and social justice. The presentation will describe in-class writing assessments with prompts inspired by the tenets of CRT and will analyze student responses. Participants will come away with: deeper understandings of (1) what Critical Race Theory actually is and how it can aid teachers in creating instruction with a DEI lens, (2) writing prompts that engage and inspire students to think about their encounters with race while improving their language proficiency, (3) procedures for encouraging authentic, ChatGPT-free writing in the classroom.
