J06 CRT in the Language Classroom: Writing Our Way to Racial Justice and Language Proficiency

This presentation examines the role of CRT in an intermediate, community-engaged college Spanish class, with gains in proficiency and social justice. The presentation will describe in-class writing assessments with prompts inspired by the tenets of CRT and will analyze student responses. Participants will come away with: deeper understandings of (1) what Critical Race Theory actually is and how it can aid teachers in creating instruction with a DEI lens, (2) writing prompts that engage and inspire students to think about their encounters with race while improving their language proficiency, (3) procedures for encouraging authentic, ChatGPT-free writing in the classroom.
